Amidst the excitement of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, accountants got their first look at the B3-05M. 6 cm shorter than a sheet of A4, this powerful little device pushed calculation speeds to new heights, and its fluorescent vacuum display could handle up to 16 digits, double that of the B3-02. This 10-W wonder was targeted at accountants, so dispensed with engineering functions (something left to the B3-18).
While the B3-05M operated with a fixed decimal point at the first input like its predecessor, the B3-02, the B3-05M was capable of calculating percents, too. It also came with a /—/ key and a memory register with dedicated buttons to clear both the memory register and the indicator value. If that wasn’t enough, it was possible to feed a number into the memory and also to add or subtract the indicator value on the display at any time.
All this flashy functionality boiled down to easier calculations and less scribbling down results during the process — a huge selling-point for any accountant of that era.
